2019 Farm Tour focus is on stewards of the land who love and honor their land and their animals. The two animal farms on this year’s tour raise varieties of hogs, poultry, cattle. The emphasis is on nurturing happy, healthy animals in a clean, respectful and loving environment. The focus of every Farm and Ranch Tour is to bring awareness to the County’s farms and ranches and to its agricultural heritage. The goal is to honor agriculture and the agricultural way of life which is diminishing throughout the country. Of course all the tour farms are family owned.
A second focus is on education. Al’s Bonsai will be doing workshops on growing and caring for bonsai. Gianelli Vineyards will speak about wine making. Lazy JH will feature information on poultry issues, of special interest to their daughter, an officer in FFA. In addition, for those who are interested in straw bale housing, the Lazy JH family home is a beautiful example. (Note, no inside tours of the house, however.)
Marty Meckler of MJ Farms is an expert on how to raise a variety of livestock on a 6 acre farm, including hens who are raised specifically to lay eggs with high omega 3 content. Farm Bureau will be on hand, and Tuolumne County Resource Conservation Water Resiliency Project will have an information table. This program is a great opportunity for anyone considering a rainwater catchment or other onsite water reuse project. It is especially well suited for small scale farms.
This year, for the first time, we will feature a BBQ lunch. This will be held at MJ Farms. BBQ is $10 in advance. All the other Farm Tour locations will also feature food sampling from Hurst Ranch, Rawhide Meats, Salt of the Earth Personal Chef, Mamma Pegg’s Pantry and Stent Cattle Company. There will be wine tasting at Gianelli Vineyards. Yosemite Gateway Honey Farms and Summerland Farm will be selling their products.
All the farms will be selling their product, so guests are encouraged to bring a cooler along for perishable purchases.
